Rusinko, Elaine

Elaine Rusinko (Chair) received an undergraduate degree in Russian language and literature at the University of Maryland in 1971 and a doctorate in Slavic languages and literatures at Brown University in 1976. Before becoming involved with Rusyn literature, she published widely on the Russian poet Nikolai Gumilev and the poetic movement Acmeism. Her work on Rusyn literature includes articles on Hryhorii Tarkovych (1996) and Alexander Dukhnovych (1999), as well as a translation into English of Dukhnovych's play Virtue is More Important Than Riches (1994). Articles in the Rusyn language have appeared in the journal Rusyn ("'Medzhi' i 'v' prostori rusyn'skoi literatury,"1997; "K peregliadu istorii rusyn'skoi literatury," 2003). All the major Rusyn writers from the eighteenth through the early twentieth century are treated in her monograph, Straddling Borders: Literature and Identity in Subcarpathian Rus' (University of Toronto Press, 2003). Rusinko is associate professor of Russian at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
